Golf Clubs - Grip Size & Type

As a general rule, chronic slicers should never use oversized golf grips and chronic hookers should never use undersized golf grips. Keep in mind, the size of the golf grip can affect how much the clubhead can be turned over at impact.
Regular is the right size for the majority of golfers. Smaller golf grips encourage the golfer to hold the club more in the finger tips. This generates a looser grip and more hand action through impact. Oversized encourages a grip that is nestled too much in the palms and retards hand movement through the ball.
Oversized golf grips are correct for golfers with large hands. When a golf grip is too small for the golfer, it is a common tendency to grip too tight in order to hold on to the golf club. This causes extra tension in the forearms that leads to swing problems. A golf grip should be sized so that the golfer can hold the golf club lightly and comfortably, yet have the confidence it will not slip out of his hands.
Golf Grip Material & Type: The type golf grip is perhaps the most subjective factor when having a custom set built. Most golf grips made today feature a high-tech rubber compound, though other types, including leather, are also available. There are cushion golf grips, wrap-style golf grips, cord golf grips for extra traction, and on and on, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., and back to the "major grip factor", size.
Grip weight is also a major factor when selecting golf grips because grip weight affects swingweight, i.e., club balance or best described as ''feel'. A light grip promotes a heavy swingweight. A heavy grip promotes a light swingweight. Many unwary golfers after having new grips installed have said "the clubs just do not 'feel' the same". The reason is that the golf club's swingweight has changed. Consider not only size but also consider swingweight when selecting grips.
Please note that physical limitations such as arthritis, joint problems, carpal tunnel syndrome and long finger nails affect grip size selection.
A single layer of masking tape (.005" thick) applied to the butt end of the shaft will increase grip size approximately 1/64".
This is a must-have in order to appropriately size a grip.
This chart separately measures finger and palm size for maximum accuracy.
